The core rules
- Do not twist, turn, play with, or move jewelry excessively.
- Keep the piercing dry, especially after showers.
- Use recommended aftercare sprays such as NeilMed Piercing Aftercare or Briotech Hypochlorous Spray.
- Only use Dial Gold Antibacterial Soap or Hibiclens when directed by your piercer.
- Schedule downsizing when recommended. Public guidance lists downsizing at $5 per post.
Moisture is the enemy
After showers, gently clean moistened crusties, then dry the piercing well. A cool blow dryer for two to five minutes can help keep moisture from sitting around jewelry. If you sleep with wet hair, pull it back away from healing ear piercings.
Swimming and soaking
Try to avoid swimming for at least one month while healing a piercing. Nipples and navels should avoid being submerged in baths because bacteria can increase infection risk.
Possible infection or irritation
Excess swelling, pain, redness, and thick green pus can be signs of infection. Do not remove jewelry if you suspect infection because it can trap the issue inside the channel. Contact the piercer for direction.
General timeline
Weeks 1–3 often include inflammation, swelling, redness, and clear fluid. Weeks 4–8 are often when downsizing is needed. Week 9 and beyond may feel easier, but many piercings still take three to six months or longer to fully heal.
